Front rower, Matt Sandell first joined the Waratahs one year out of high school in 2014 as part of a six-man transition group, which included current teammate, Jack Dempsey. His Super Rugby debut was put on hold in 2016 when he suffered a season- ending knee injury but following an extensive rehabilitation programme, Sandell will be looking to pull on the Waratahs jumper in 2018. Born in the country New South Wales town of Wellington, he spent his early years in Mudgee before relocating to Sydney where he attended St. Joseph’s College in Hunters Hill. He played in the school’s first XV for three seasons as tight-head prop from 2011 to 2013. Like many of his Waratahs’ teammates, Sandell has successfully transitioned through the NSW rugby pathways system, as a key figure in the NSW Generation Blue Under 20s and NSW Club rugby. Sandell was selected for Australian Schoolboys in 2012 and 2013 and was part the Australian U20s in 2014 and 2015.
